Humans used ‘burning mirrors�"� to light fire
In the 7th century B.C, humans used the magnifying glass to light fire using the rays of the sun. In the 3rd century B.C. too, the Greeks and Romans used magnifying glasses which were often referred to as burning mirrors.
Burning mirrors were used to light fire by the ancient Romans and Greeks. The mirrors are arranged in a way that they focus sunlight on a point, which ignites the wood or other material that is placed there.
Sunrooms were used to keep the house warm
Today, glazed sunroom extensions are quite common in residential spaces. They add light and value to your home. It is the early use of solar energy that gave birth to the concept of sunrooms. During Roman times, sunrooms were used to direct sunlight into one particular area. Even the famous Roman bathhouses were used as sunrooms. The idea was to capture the sun�"�s warmth during winter.
The first tactical solar cell was invented in 1954
Although several scientists worked on solar cells, they were too inefficient to be put to use. It was only in April, 1954, researchers came up with silicon solar cells that could be used to power an electric device for several hours of a day.
Solar panels were used in the outer space
In 1958, the Vanguard I satellite used a small solar panel to power its radios. Later, many satellites had solar panel technology on board. Not just that, in 1964, the first Nimbus spacecraft was launched. The satellite was able to run entirely on a 470 watt solar array.
The solar powered airplane
In 1981, the first solar powered aircraft flew across the English Channel from France to the UK. It was in 2016, that solar-powered aircraft called Solar Impulse 2 flew around the world without a drop of fuel.
